Colloidal silica for textile finishing

Finishing gives a fabric its final performance: it resists creasing, the yarns stay in place at the seams, and it has the right handle and body. Colloidal silica is added to finishing baths alongside resins and emulsions. It is used in the easy-care and non-iron finishes of better-quality garments.

What colloidal silica adds to a finish

In a finishing bath, colloidal silica deposits a fine, even layer of nano-sized SiO₂ particles on and between the fibres. It is not used on its own. It is one component of a finishing recipe, together with finishing resins or polymer emulsions. Typical roles:

  • Easy-care and non-iron finishes. As an inorganic nano-component in crease-resistant resin finishes for cotton and blends. Research on silica sol in crease-resistant finishing reports improved fabric performance; mills tune the recipe on their own fabric.
  • Anti-slip (seam slippage). On smooth filament fabrics such as polyester and nylon linings, silica raises the friction between yarns, so the weave holds its shape at seams instead of pulling apart.
  • Body and handle. It gives a crisper, fuller handle without the stiffness of heavy resin loads.
  • Even distribution. The particles are small and well dispersed, so the effect is uniform across the fabric.

How it is used

  • Add to the finishing bath together with the finishing resin or polymer emulsion, and apply by padding. Dry and cure as usual for the resin system.
  • Check compatibility first. Standard colloidal silica is alkaline and negatively charged, and it must not be mixed with cationic softeners or with acidic catalysts that destabilise it. See the stability guide.
  • The right addition depends on the fabric, the resin system and the target performance, so run a lab trial first.

Grades

GradeSiO₂ %Avg. particle, nm
CH83-12020 ± 18–10
CH83-12323 ± 28–10
CH83-13030 ± 210–15

These are the same grades used in wool spinning and flocking. One supplier covers fibre processing and fabric finishing. We also produce acrylic emulsions. Ask whether one suits your finishing system, so that the silica and the polymer come from the same plant.

Frequently asked questions

Can colloidal silica be used alone as a fabric finish?
Normally not. It is an additive in a finishing recipe, used together with finishing resins or polymer emulsions, which provide the main film and durability.
What is seam slippage, and how does silica help?
On smooth synthetic fabrics, yarns can slide apart under stress at the seams. Silica raises the friction between the yarns, so the weave holds together.
Is it compatible with cationic softeners?
Standard alkaline colloidal silica is negatively charged and can coagulate with cationic products. Check compatibility in a small trial, or ask us about acidic grades.
